Does Your Budgie Suffer From Night Frights?
Saturday August 21, 2010 06:41:00 AM
Some budgies do and some budgies don’t. Unfortunately though, no one knows exactly what causes the night frights so we can stop it. How do you tell if your budgie has night frights? Night frights always happen in the dark. Your budgie will awaken with a screaming sound and begin thrashing around the cage.
The risk to the budgie is that it breaks a blood feather and will eventually die. The first thing that you should do is to switch on the light, and wait for your budgie to stop thrashing around. Putting your hand into the cage may further distress it.
Once the budgie has stopped thrashing around, then reach in, take your budgie out...

Letting Your Budgie Fly - Should You Clip its Wings?
Saturday August 21, 2010 06:33:06 AM
Too many inexperienced owners make their budgie suffer from keeping them in a cage day in and day out. As a general rule, you should let the budgie have as much time out of the cage as possible. Even if you confine it to one room only, the importance is that your budgie gets the chance to spread it's wings.
When your budgie is out of the cage, make sure you are in the vicinity at all times. Budgies have died in the past from biting on wires, alternatively they may also get trapped behind cupboards and wardrobes. Just this morning, my budgie flew off course and ended up coming back out via the underneath of the dresser. It could not make its...

Should You Give A Budgie As A Gift?
Saturday August 21, 2010 06:24:02 AM
The simple answer to this is no. Even if you are thinking of buying a budgie for your eight year old child. A person has to want a budgie and be ready for the responsibility that comes with it. Too many budgies have died before their time, simply because lack of knowledge and ownership has caused the budgies lots of pain. Whilst budgies do make good pets for children, the children have to be taught simple things. IE change the water and food every day, let the budgie out of its cage, train the budgie not to bite. If you are not able to help and watch over this training, then buy your child a goldfish instead. It is a known fact that every year...

Budgies and Hygiene.
Saturday August 21, 2010 06:17:22 AM
A lot of people who become budgie owners will question how often their budgie should be racing to any water supply, to take a bath. The fact is that budgies do not need water to clean themselves as they do it all by using their beaks. You will notice, your budgie rubbing its head at the base of its tail. It is infact picking up oil to then rub all over its feathers and clean itself. Having said this, do not deny your budgie the chance to find out if they do like a bath. Some budgies may like the traditional bird bath that is hang onto the side of the cage, others may like to bathe in a dish simply placed on the side. Other budgies may even like...

A Sick Budgie - How To Tell If Your Budgie Is Sick.
Friday August 20, 2010 02:53:43 AM
A sick budgie is not a happy budgie. Owners of budgies must be alert for signs of sickness. The time it takes from sickness grabbing hold of your budgie to your budgie’s death can be a matter of just 24 hours, if it does not receive medical attention. If your budgie develops any of the below symptoms then you must take it to an Avian Vet straight away. 1 Constant puffing up of the feathers. In the wild, a sick budgie would not display their feathers in this way as it lets other animals know that they are feeling weak. If your budgie is doing this, then it is telling you “I need help”.
2 A change in droppings. If a change in droppings can not...

Budgie Cages - How Small Is Too Small?
Thursday August 19, 2010 02:47:34 AM
Too many owners underestimate the need for a good cage for their budgie. Choosing a cage because it is the cheapest in the shop is completely the wrong attitude to take as you can guarantee the cheapest cage is always the smallest. Just this morning, I saw a budgie in a cage so that was small, the budgie itself looked very uncomfortable. It had no room to navigate or spread its wings. It was also in direct sunlight.
So what are the main points to remember when choosing a cage? The number one need is size, the bigger the better. Cages that are taller than they are wider, look very pretty however they are unpractical. Your budgie...

Does Your Budgie Need A Friend?
Wednesday August 18, 2010 05:31:39 AM
One thing that many budgie owners are guilty of, is denying their budgie a friend. Now don’t get me wrong, your budgie might not need a friend if you are spending time with them. Spending time is not enough though, you also have to constantly entertain and keep them occupied. The other occasion to consider if your budgie needs a friend, is if it starts displaying signs of sexual needs. Not many people think about the sexual needs of their bird however they mate just the same as other animals species do.
The following are signs that will let you know if your budgie is feeling neglected, if you can not change the amount of time that you...

Know Your Budgies Character, Routine And Body Language
Saturday August 14, 2010 03:34:55 AM
The one mistake budgie owners make, is to assume that all budgies are the same. They are not, each budgie has their own routine and character. A good example is my budgie Chapkin. He came to me when he was one and a half years old. It dawned on me pretty quickly that his previous owner had not done any training with him what so ever. Only now after succeeding with the training of Chapkin, am I able to see his true character. He likes lettuce and cooked egg yolk, he doesn’t like to take a bath and he spend hours in front of the mirror regurgitating his food. He does not like to be told what to do, and it takes a strong-willed owner ...

Friday August 13, 2010 03:56:47 AM
Budgies make great pets, if you choose wisely. They are sociable, easy to train and are a great companion for people on their own or the whole family. Budgies are also a great pet for children and are a good introduction to responsibility. Before buying the first budgie you see, there are some checks you should make to ensure that you end up with a healthy, happy bird.
1 - Ask about the background of the bird. If the budgie had previous owners, try to find out why they gave the budgie up. If the budgie is a baby, then you should check that the breeder is of good standing and professional. Some breeders have been known to allow budgies...
